Could you be a child’s forever family?

Becoming an adopter is easier and open to more people than you think!

Our adopters tell you all about their adoption journey, from why they chose to adopt to the moment their children became part of their family.

Children are waiting for their forever family, could that be you?

Adoption makes a wonderful difference to both your own and a child’s life. Nationally there is a shortage of adopters and across Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes there are children who need an adoptive family to help build a positive future. We know that many people think there may be a reason why they can’t adopt, but adoption has changed to be thoughtful, supportive and fair and is open to more people than you think. Chances are, if you want to, #YouCanAdopt.

We welcome everyone who has an interest in adopting to give us a call on 0300 300 8090 or to come along to one of our virtual information sessions to find out more. There’s no pressure to enquire straight away, we are happy to simply have a chat and answer questions, so get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.

Who can adopt?

People consider adoption for many different reasons such as growing their family, infertility or supporting local children to positive futures. Whatever your reason, we’re here to support you every step of the way, we welcome enquiries from:

  • single people or couples (you don’t need to be married to adopt)

  • the LGBT+ community

  • people from all ethnic origins and religions

  • people who rent or own their homes

  • people who are employed or are on benefits

  • people and families who have children, do not have children of their own or who may have already adopted before

  • people with a disability or who are managing health conditions.

Am I eligible to adopt?

The main thing to consider is if you are ready to support a child and provide a loving, calm and emotionally stable home but there are some basic requirements to adopt:

  • you will need to be over 21 years of age

  • you will need to be financially able to provide for a child. If you are a couple and you both work, this includes one parent taking time from work in the first year to help your child settle into your family

  • you don’t have to be a British Citizen to adopt, but we do ask that you (and your partner, if you are a couple) have a fixed and permanent home in the UK, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. We also ask that you, and your partner if you are a couple, have lived in the UK for at least one year before you apply

  • if you or anyone sharing your home has convictions for sexual offences or crimes against children we will not be able to proceed with your enquiry.

“Adoption enables something wonderful; giving kids a chance of a forever family and creating very proud parents. We never thought we would have a family of our own, but we have with the support of Adoption Connects. We can’t thank you enough for helping us to build our family. “
